* Borom
Apparently, Ludwig van Beethoven loved coffee and preferred his coffee to be made with exactly 60 beans. I discovered this quirky fact when I visited my wife’s family in Jeju Island, South Korea, for the first time. While there, I enjoyed coffee at their quaint café called 60 Beans, named in honor of Beethoven’s recipe. The café sits on top of a cliff overlooking the ocean, offering truly stunning views. During my visit, I took numerous walks with my wife on the Olle Trail there: sometimes on cliffside rocks overlooking the ocean, sometimes on trails at the beach, on hills, in the forest—walks everywhere!
During these beautiful walks amidst the varying epic landscapes, the ever-present, unseen Jeju wind stood as a timeless and enduring force of nature. Sometimes it’s a gentle breeze that whispers like a breath; sometimes it’s a playful, dancing wanderer; and other times, it’s a strong, sudden gust—capricious and whimsical, yet always there, always fluid. On these walks, I felt an immense sense of joy with the presence of this divine song that is the wind, which was in Jeju long before I arrived and will be there long after I depart. I wrote Borom, which means ‘wind’ in the Jeju dialect, to express the lively path of the wind across Jeju’s ever-changing landscape and my thoughts and feelings of gratitude, fullness, and awe during these walks with my wife.
